You walk past the man and investigate the small town full of normal people going about their lives.
You notice in one of the basements a purple swirly vortex
You decide to do what any rational person would do in this situation and walk through the vortex.
You then find yourself in the middle of Tanaris and live the rest of your life in the dessert without ever getting your memories back.
